The city is loosely separated into east and west sections by I-270. Meanwhile, the west portion of town is much more future-oriented, with award-winning neighborhoods like the Kentlands and the Lakelands, and impressive shopping districts like the well known Rio Washingtonian Center.
As a virtual suburb of Washington, DC, Gaithersburg is the northern terminus of the red line, with the Shady Grove metro station just outside the city limits. The planned Corridor Cities Transitway will extend light rail throughout the western portion of the city. Gaithersburg also operates the MARC commuter rail which travels directly to Washington with no stops.
